get involved as an adult

Want to become a fully qualified surf lifesaver on beach patrol. You will need to join a Club and then undertake your Bronze Medallion (our main lifesaving course.) Alternatively, you can complete a Surf Rescue Certificate which is considered a stepping stone to a full Bronze Medallion.

Bronze Medallion (15 years +)

The Bronze Medallion equips you with essential skills in surf awareness, rescue techniques, radio communication, CPR, and first aid, opening up opportunities for you.

As a Bronze Medallion holder, your responsibilities will include beach patrols, ensuring public safety, potential rescues using a board or tube, and preventive actions.

What do I need to gain my Bronze Medallion?

  • Be a financial member of an SLSQ Life Saving Club.
  • Be at least 15 years of age on the final assessment date.
  • Complete an unaided swim of 400 m in 9 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.

How long does a Bronze Medallion course take?

The Bronze Medallion course is typically run over 6-8 weekends or shorter intensive course. Each course schedule can vary depending on trainer availability, weather conditions, and facility availability. Specific schedules will be issued for each course.

Surf Rescue Certificate (13 -15 years)

What do I need to gain my Surf Rescue Certificate? The Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) is a stepping stone to the full Bronze Medallion that is generally the minimum standard required for full patrolling duties. The Surf Rescue Certificate was originally intended for young people aged between 13 and 15 years, however, anyone over the age of 13 can qualify at this level. The Surf Rescue Certificate is the minimum standard required for water safety at Nippers and similar events.
  • Be a financial member of an SLSQ Life Saving Club.
  • Be at least 13 years of age.
  • Complete an unaided swim of 200 m in 5 minutes or less (goggles and masks permitted) in a swimming pool of not less than 25 m, or over a measured open water course which will be observed prior to you undertaking any water training or assessment activities.

Nippers

Are you aged between 5 and 13 and love spending time at the beach? Then nippers could be just the thing for you! Have fun, meet new friends and develop skills for life, all while learning how to become a genuine surf lifesaver. If you’re thinking of introducing your child to lifesaving, then Junior Activities (Nippers) is for you. Junior Activities is open to children from age five up to 13 years (age for a season is calculated as of midnight September 30). Every club in Queensland offers a Junior Activities program, all with various styles and sizes. Lifesaving is something for the whole family to get involved in and there are many supporting roles that you can play as a parent of a child involved in Junior Activities. Surf lifesaving is an amazing activity for growing a child’s confidence, knowledge and skills in the beach environment. Not only will your child have fun and meet new friends they will become part of an iconic organisation that has served the Australian community for over 100 years. The program is focused on play, participation and fun. It offers an educational pathway through the delivery of the Junior Development Resource Kit which is designed to ensure children have fun at the beach while participating in lessons that will develop them to become a knowledgeable participant in both lifesaving and sport. As they progress through the various age groups, nippers will undergo lessons in wading, running, swimming, board paddling and lifesaving skills including working towards resuscitation and first aid. Practising these skills allows children to compete in club, regional and state surf lifesaving carnivals representing their clubs.

Requirements

Nippers need to be a minimum of five years of age as at 30 September. Before the start of the Nipper season each participant is required to complete a Preliminary Skills evaluation designed to ensure that each child demonstrates a standard of competence in an aquatic environment. This evaluation may include a pool swim and run-swim-run, where the lengths depend on the different age categories. Children who wish to compete will also be required to complete a competition evaluation swim in the ocean environment to ensure that they are able to make the distance required during competition. Please note, while Nippers provides participants with valuable water safety skills, it is not a ‘learn to swim’ program, and there is an expectation that your child has basic swimming skills before commencing the program.
